When Maya experienced respiratory problems after birth, a doctor at the hospital where she was born suspected this rare disorder and decided she needed to be transported to Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children. Maya spent 10 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Sick Kids, then another 5 days on the respiratory medicine floor. Maya was tested for Cystic Fibrosis three times before finally getting a diagnosis of PCD at 4 months. Daily chest physiotherapy is part of Maya's life in order to help clear her airways. Maya is in Grade 5 and is passionate about volleyball and band "5 Seconds of Summer".
Maya's parents, Paula and Shaun, were married in May 2001. Maya's big brother Caleb was born in November 2002 and Maya followed in March 2005. Mom works as a Director of Services at a not for profit organization and dad works as Operations Manager for CN Rail. With a wonderfully supportive and involved extended family, Maya is well loved by family and a multitude of family friends.
